Semiconductor maker GlobalFoundries revealed a $16 billion project designed to support domestic chip production and expand its manufacturing and packaging operations at its Vermont and New York factories.
Modernization and Expansion
GlobalFoundries also expects the investment to strengthen its 22FDX and silicon photonics efforts in New York while boosting GaN-based power technologies in Vermont.
The company said it would dedicate $13 billion to expanding and modernizing the facilities, which include the recently launched advanced packaging and photonics center in New York. The remaining $3 billion will support research and development in silicon photonics, next-generation GaN technologies, and packaging.
Responding to Rising AI
GlobalFoundries described the development as a response to artificial intelligence growth, which continues to drive demand for advanced semiconductors across the automotive, AI, communications, and aerospace sectors.
Industry Partnerships
The company added that it would collaborate with multiple companies, including SpaceX, Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, General Motors, and NXP.
SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell stated that expanding GlobalFoundries’ U.S. manufacturing base would support Starlink, the aerospace company’s satellite internet constellation.
