Electric vehicle and battery maker Tesla plans to manufacture utility-scale batteries at a forthcoming plant near Houston, according to reports.
Manufacturing, Distribution Operations
The Houston Chronicle reports that Tesla first leased the space at a business park in Brookshire, Texas, in 2021, but one of its logistics partners has used it in the years since. The company intends to convert 1 million square feet of space and build a 600,000-square-foot production and distribution hub.
A "Megapack” Factory
The site would produce the company’s “Megapacks,” which are electrical grid-scale batteries designed to store energy from weather-dependent renewable sources, such as wind turbines or solar farms.
Tesla operates other Megapack factories in central California and in Shanghai.
Adding Some 1,500 Jobs
Officials in Waller County approved a 10-year tax abatement to support the project, which calls for more than $200 million in equipment and facility investments from Tesla and others.
The project is expected to create 1,500 jobs, the Chronicle reported.
