Biopharmaceutical giant Amgen will spend some $1 billion to add a second facility at a campus in North Carolina, company officials recently announced.
Adding Hundreds of Jobs
The Southern California-based drug maker had previously pledged to spend $550 million on the initial facility in suburban Raleigh; the latest announcement would nearly triple that investment to more than $1.5 billion.
The project is also slated to add 370 jobs at the Holly Springs complex. Amgen’s global workforce stands at more than 27,000 worldwide.
A Key Manufacturing Hub
Amgen CEO Robert Bradway said in the announcement that the additional site would make North Carolina “an important part of our global manufacturing network.” Officials said that the new facility would feature “cutting-edge technologies,” as well as sustainable production practices.
Nearly $5M in State Assistance
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s office said in a separate announcement that state economic development officials had approved a 12-year state job development grant that could reimburse Amgen for nearly $4.9 million. According to state officials, the project would add nearly $3.6 billion in total economic activity to the state over that span.
