Samsung SDI Launches Production of Next-Generation Batteries

Battery and electronic materials manufacturer Samsung SDI has officially started production of “the next generation” of cylindrical batteries, company officials announced.

The company added that the initial “46-series” batteries debuted more than a year ahead of schedule.

First Batteries Go to "Micro Mobility”

The company’s first 46-series batteries are 4695 modules—measuring 46 millimeters in diameter and 95 millimeters in height—produced at a plant in South Korea and assembled by a subsidiary in Vietnam.

The initial modules will go to an unnamed company in the U.S., which will use them in “micro mobility applications.” Samsung SDI is the first battery maker from South Korea to begin supplying 46-millimeter diameter cylindrical batteries to customers overseas.

Novel Chemistry

Company officials said the 46-series batteries feature a high-nickel Nickel, Cobalt, and Aluminum cathode and a Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite anode—a novel chemistry that increases both the battery’s lifespan and energy density while also preventing swelling. A “tabless” design also improves the current flow path and curbs internal resistance by 90%.

In Talks with EV Makers

In addition to the 4695, the company’s 46-series lineup will include 4680, 46100, and 46120 sizes. Officials said the product would help grow its customer base, adding that it is currently in discussions about supplying batteries to “major electric vehicle manufacturers.”
