Toyota to Build Hybrid Vehicle Transaxles at West Virginia Plant

Toyota will make its next generation of transaxles for hybrid vehicles at its plant in West Virginia, company officials recently announced.

An $88M Investment

The Japanese automaker will invest $88 million in the Buffalo, West Virginia, campus to add production of the drivetrain component, which transfers power between a hybrid’s engine, motor, and wheels.

Powering Toyota, Lexus Hybrids

Company officials said the next-generation transaxles would help power future Toyota and Lexus hybrid models assembled in North America.

The new production is scheduled to begin at the West Virginia plant late next year.

Bringing West Virginia Spending to $2.8B

The announcement brings Toyota’s total investment in West Virginia to roughly $2.8 billion since its establishment in 1996. About 2,000 workers at the plant build engines, transmissions, hybrid transaxles, and other parts for Toyota facilities in Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, and Canada.
