Hyundai Completes Private 5G Pilot Project with Samsung

Hyundai Motor announced that it verified Private 5G RedCap technology for smart manufacturing through a collaboration with Samsung Electronics. This technology enables quick and efficient communication with reduced power usage. Hyundai plans to display the technology at this year’s MWC Barcelona event.

Ideal for Smart Manufacturing

The Private 5G system uses a certain frequency band to prevent interference and facilitate smooth data transfer. This solution supports smart manufacturing that features centralized authority of industrial devices and robots.

According to Hyundai, the collaboration confirmed that the technology provides compact infrastructure, reduced bandwidth, and comprehensible device configurations, resulting in less power consumption, improved cost efficiency, and enhanced performance compared to traditional WiFi.

Possible Applications

The certification builds on Hyundai’s testing of Samsung’s Private 5G technology with its vehicle inspection equipment at Samsung’s Suwon, South Korea campus.

Potential applications include quick wireless communication for small tools, tablets, cameras, and vehicle inspection equipment.

Samsung Vice President Simon Lee said the development could enhance 5G network efficiency and expand opportunities for manufacturers, public institutions, and enterprises.

Aiding an EV Plant

Hyundai stated that it intends to incorporate Private 5G into its new electric vehicle plant in South Korea, which is scheduled to open next year. The company said its latest RedCap Technology verification could boost the location’s smart manufacturing capabilities.
