Hyundai Motor Group has developed a new robot that could charge an electric vehicle (EV) with the press of a button, company officials said.
Car and Driver reports that the company’s Automatic Charging Robot, or ACR, is equipped with a robotic arm, laser technology, and wheels guided by artificial intelligence (AI).
Drivers using the ACR can park their cars nearby and press a button on their vehicle’s key fob. The ACR would then approach the car and prompt the charging port to open. A 3D camera-based AI algorithm helps the system find the port and extends the arm holding the charging cable. The ACR would then remove the arm once charging is completed.
Hyundai said the waterproof, dustproof robot could operate in any location or weather conditions and works with varying charger types, while a nearby safety pole — with a built-in sensor — helps it avoid potential collisions with moving or stationary objects.
The company will demonstrate the robot at the 2023 Seoul Mobility Show in South Korea’s capital later this spring. It could one-day help EV drivers who would otherwise have problems with increasingly heavy fast-charging cables.
The ACR joins previously introduced robotic charging initiatives from Tesla, Stellantis’ Ram division, and others.
