Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla has announced a recall of more than 27,000 of its Cybertruck pickup model due to a faulty rearview camera.
The announcement marks the fifth recall of the company’s debut electric pickup in just more than seven months.
The Cause: Rearview Camera Problems
The Associated Press reports that the cameras showing the area behind the affected Cybertrucks may not immediately activate when drivers shift into reverse. Federal regulations require those cameras to activate within 2 seconds of shifting into reverse, but the impacted Cybertrucks could reportedly take up to 8 seconds.
The Texas-based EV maker said that a free software upgrade would address the issue. Recall notification letters are slated to be sent out to owners in late November.
Other Cybertruck Recalls
The recall is just the latest in a series of safety issues for the Cybertruck, which was delivered to customers beginning last November — two years behind schedule.
The company issued separate recalls in June due to malfunctioning windshield wipers and improperly installed trim pieces. Each recall impacted more than 11,000 trucks.
In April, about 4,000 trucks were recalled because their accelerator pedals could become dislodged and trapped in the interior trim, and the initial recall, in February, addressed fonts on the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system that were deemed too difficult to read. That move affected nearly 2.2 million Cybertrucks.
