How Rubik’s Cubes Are Manufactured

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube, the timeless puzzle that has captivated millions of people worldwide.

While the iconic cube may appear simple, you may be surprised to know it’s actually an engineering marvel. Let’s take a closer look at how Rubik’s Cubes are manufactured.

How Rubik’s Cubes Are Made

Each cube comprises 26 smaller cubelets that form the puzzle’s six faces. These are manufactured primarily by injection molding, whereby high-quality plastic, typically acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), is melted and injected into metal molds to create the core pieces and cubelets.

Once cooled and solidified, these pieces are assembled into the familiar 3×3 structure. Stickers or colored tiles are then applied to give the cube its distinct look.

The Rubik’s Cube Engineering and Design

The cube’s internal mechanism consists of a core that allows the rows and columns to rotate independently.

Each cubelet is designed to interlock precisely, providing smooth and reliable movement. The design continues to evolve, though, with speedcubing enthusiasts constantly seeking cubes with improved performance.

The Rubik’s Cube Supply Chain

The Rubik’s Cube supply chain is a global operation that begins with raw material extraction and molding in facilities located in Shanghai, China. Next, the individual parts are shipped to a factory in Hungary, where they are assembled and labeled.

Finally, the final product is packaged and shipped to distribution centers and sent to various retailers worldwide. This extensive supply chain supports the Rubik’s Cube’s availability in over 100 countries, making it one of the most recognizable puzzles globally.

As the Rubik’s Cube turns 50, its manufacturing process highlights the blend of innovation and creativity that has kept this puzzle relevant and beloved for decades.
