SpaceX Launches Fourth Test Flight — and It’s a Mega Rocket

After three failed test flights that all ended in explosions, the Starship —SpaceX’s mega rocket intended to fly cargo and humans into space and to the moon — made itsfourth test flightlaunch and return with success on June 6, 2024.

The rocket waslaunchedinto space from the SpaceX Starbase launch pad in Boca Chica, TX, at 7.50 am, and made a controlled return, mostly unscathed, around an hour and six minutes later.

SpaceX Starship Mega Rocket

Classed as a Super Heavy rocket, the 400-foot-tallStarshipis the largest and most powerful rocket in the world. It has a diameter of 29.5 feet, and a reusable design. Designed to carry cargo and crew into low Earth orbit, the moon, and even Mars, the fully reusable Starship can accommodate up to 150 metric tons, while the expendable design can carry 250 metric tons.

Perhaps the most impressive and exciting thing about the Starship is its point-to-point Earth transportation abilities that allow it to get to anywhere on Earth in around an hour — perhaps even less.

Starship’s Successful Test Flight

At 7.50 am local time, an uncrewed Starship carrying 10mn of rocket fuel was launched over the Gulf of Mexico eastbound towards the Indian Ocean, soaring at over 16,000 mph. After a few minutes, and as planned, the first-stage booster (the part that will eventually take crew into space) came apart from the rocket. After firing its engines, it then descended into the gulf.

The upper stage kept going till it reached a 130-mile altitude before it started traveling back again. While it remained largely intact, some tiles broke away, and a few pieces of an important flap that helps soft landings was damaged due to overheating associated with reentry. The flap itself managed to hold on, and this snag didn’t affect the craft’s ability to transmit the relevant necessary data.

Previous Test Flights

Before this successful test flight, there were three earlier demonstrations that unfortunately ended up in explosions. The test flight in March of this year seemed hopeful, but the spacecraft blew up a quarter of a mile over the gulf, and there was also a rupture in the booster. Two previous test flights that took place in 2023 exploded not long after they launched.

SpaceX made several tweaks to the software and rocket flyback to address the underlying issues, and two days before the latest test flight, the Federal Aviation Administration gave thesign-off.

SpaceX’s Plans for the Starship

SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, has grand ideas for the Starship, which is why the company is so heavily focused on perfecting the technology as soon as possible. The successful test flight took the company one step closer to transporting people and cargo to space, changing the future of space travel as we know it.

Musk is set on shipping tourists to the moon and even Mars, with the company already selling moon-orbiting packages. The billionaire has made his intentions of building acity on Mars, and says that the Starship will be integral in getting people and infrastructure there.

For two upcoming moon-landing missions as part of theArtemis campaign, NASA has already ordered two Starships from SpaceX. Although the astronauts will travel on NASA rockets for these missions, they will then meet a Starship in lunar orbit to come back to the surface.
