There was a time when automakers’ only focus was on making cars but, boy, things have changed. Today, as technology creeps into every aspect of our lives, auto companies are, in a way, tech companies too.
According to recent reports, GM will enhance its upcoming vehicles by adding a capability that brings high speed access to data to the open road. Enhancing an existing partnership with AT&T, GM has announced that the duo will work to bring 5G networks to vehicles as early as 2023.
So what does that mean for the average driver? 5G functionality could bring better coverage to allow for faster software upgrades, more responsive mapping and voice services and quicker downloads of entertainment like music and movies. Movies that you are not to watch while driving, please.
What the duo refers to as its "high-performance 5G core network” should also have some application in driverless cars, an area GM says will benefit via its SuperCruise driver-assist technology and its intelligence platform. Unveiled in 2019, GM’s Digital Vehicle technology powers an electronic system which helps high-tech features like advanced safety and propulsion systems all communicate and work together.
According to a report in Engadget, broad 5G coverage may be a few years away in rural areas, so GM’s timeline — equipping 2024 model year vehicles — is right on target to offer the most benefit. And even if you’re not in the market for a new vehicle by then, Engadget says model year 2019 GM vehicles equipped with 4G capabilities will benefit from faster speeds as well.
