Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) announced plans to invest $285 million in its manufacturing facility located about 15 miles west of Detroit. The company expects the project to support the internal combustion engine platform, enhance research and development facilities, and create 400 jobs.
The company plans to begin construction in 2025, pending approval and planning processes.
Modernizing the Plant
DTNA stated that modernizing the plant would help it maintain its production capacity of internal combustion engine components critical to various commercial trucking applications. The company added that the project would support demand for cleaner components and engines and facilitate further research in the commercial trucking industry.
Financial Assistance
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation will provide a $27.7 million performance-based grant. Additionally, the Michigan Strategic Fund intends to award the company a State Essential Services Assessment abatement worth up to $3.29 million.
More Than 85 Years of Operations
DTNA has operated the Detroit Manufacturing Plant since 1938. The facility has produced transmissions, axles, and engines for Western Star, Thomas Built Buses, and Freightliner vehicle platforms.
Part of DTNA subsidiary Detroit Diesel Corporation, the site currently employs more than 2,000 employees and has a long-standing relationship with the United Auto Workers.
