Hyundai Plans $292 Million Investment in Alabama Factory

Hyundai is investing nearly $300 million to produce redesigned vehicles and a more fuel-efficient engine at its factory in Alabama.

The automaker plans $292 million in machinery and equipment upgrades in Montgomery, local economic development officials announced last month, where it will manufacture the Elantra sedan, Santa Fe SUV, and the new Theta engine.

The announcement brings the company’s total investment in the area to $680 million over the past two years; Hyundai’s new $388 million cylinder head manufacturing plant created 50 new jobs and will help support annual engine production of more than 650,000.

The Montgomery campus, the Korean automaker’s only U.S. manufacturing operation, opened in 2005 and employs more than 3,000 workers.

“Montgomery remains deeply committed to its partnership with Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and is honored to see its continued growth,” Montgomery County Commission Chairman Elton Dean said in a statement.
