Hyundai’s Newest Electric Concept Vehicle Runs on Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Has a Fresh Look

Hyundai released its newest concept EV at its Clearly Committed event in South Korea on October 31, 2024. The fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) runs on hydrogen and is expected to launch in the first half of 2025.

The company has been busy with many projects this year, including self-driving collaborations with Waymo, clean energysolutions, and a new Universal Wheel Drive System. It’s clear the new FCEV is another show of Hyundai’s belief in hydrogen power’s place in the future of driving.

A ‘First’ of Its Kind

Called the Initium—symbolizing that it’s the “beginning” or “first” in the industry—Hyundai developed this new SUV to run fully on hydrogen cell technology. While FCEVs are few and far between, an SUV model for consumers is almost non-existent, save for Hyundai’s 2018 Nexo.

Hyundai has also created a new design language for this range, which is evident from the concept images alone. The name “Art of Steel” is an apt reference to the design of the vehicle, which has a metallic body, boxy silhouette, and four-square headlights.

How Its Features Stack Up

The Initium differs from the Nexo and other hydrogen sedan models in a few ways. First, it has larger hydrogen tanks, which allows it to drive further (the goal is up to 403 miles) before needing to refuel.

Its motor has a higher capacity now, too, and puts out around 150 kW. There is also handy route planning technology built in, which helps guide drivers to areas where it’s possible for them to recharge the fuel cell system.

Hyundai’s Push for of FCEVs

Hyundai is notably one of the loudest and biggest voices when it comes to the future of hydrogen fuel cells in cars. The company has been developing this tech for close to three decades, and not just for cars, but for self-drivingsemi trucks, too. Hyundai also has its own fuel cell brand calledHTWO, which launched in 2022.

Other companies are looking to explore the realm of hydrogen power, but aren’t as bullish as Hyundai, at least in an SUV or passenger vehicle capacity. BMW shared itsiX5concept car several years back but noted it wasn’t actively looking to sell them unless demand called for it, and even then it would be in the latter half of the decade.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells vs. Other Batteries

EV battery development is a hot topic right now. While some groups are spending time focusing on improving existing batteries, others are developing options outside of the classic lithium-ion and NiMH batteries, such as hydrogen fuel cells. Even the Department of Energy is investing in hydrogen research and development, vehicles included.

But how do they compare to othertypes of batteries? Hydrogen fuel cells only emit water and warm air, which is far more environmentally friendly. These cars are quick to refuel and they can go for long distances. The prevalent downsides are that these cells cost more to produce and there is more complex science involved in creating the necessary infrastructure.

While it may not be the center of battery talks right now, hydrogen fuel cells have clear benefits. Perks that Hyundai certainly believes in, and perhaps the wider EV sector as a whole will adopt this power source down the road.
