Leading automakerStellantishas teamed up with Zeta Energy, a rechargeable battery company, to develop much lighter batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) using lithium sulfur technology.
Set to replace today’s lithium-ion options, these new upgraded batteries could change the current EV landscape, offering a sustainable, cost-effective, and high-performing alternative.
Improved EV Batteries
While delivering the same amount of energy as current lithium-ion batteries, these new batteries could weigh a lot less, meaning greater range, better handling, and improved overall EV performance.
In addition, they’ll charge up 50% faster, and offer a cost per kWh at less than half the price of today’s options—a potential game-changer for EV owners.
Sustainable Production
Zeta’s lithium-sulfur batteries will be made with sustainable methods designed to lower CO2 emissions, such as using waste materials and methane. The main component, the unrefined sulfur—a byproduct from various industries—will replace costly materials like cobalt and nickel.
In this way, the new batteries can be produced with lower costs and fewer supply-chain risks. The technology is also made to easily integrate with existing gigafactories.
Stellantis, Zeta Energy Collaboration
The companies are hoping that the combination of Stellantis’ global manufacturing expertise and Zeta Energy’s battery technology will result in these advanced EV batteries being brought to market by 2030.
This partnership aligns with Stellantis’Dare Forward 2030strategy—a “holistic plan” to, among other things, double the company’s Net Revenues by 2030, and achieve carbon net zero by 2038. It also includes the delivery of over 75 battery-electric models.
Stellantis, Zeta Lighter Lithium-Sulfur EV Batteries—Summary
As well as benefiting the companies, Zeta’s CEO, Tom Pilette, expressed that the collab will also strengthen battery supply chain resilience in North America and Europe.
Ned Curic, the Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Stellantis, highlighted the importance of this partnership, seeing it as a huge leap forward in making clean, safe, and affordable EVs a reality.
