Hyundai’s Hydrogen-Powered Trucks to Supply its New EV Plant

Hyundai’s zero-emission heavy-duty trucks have rolled out at the Korean automaker’s new electric vehicle complex in Georgia, company officials announced.

The company’s new EV manufacturing facility, known as its “Metaplant,” deployed the XCIENT trucks in partnership with logistics provider Glovis America.

The XCIENT

The XCIENT is a hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 vehicle that Hyundai says is the world’s first commercial heavy-duty fuel cell truck. The company also says it offers nearly 250 miles of all-electric range.

Daily Trips Between Suppliers and Metaplant

The initial deployment of 21 XCIENT trucks — representing more than one-third of Glovis’ total Metaplant fleet — arrived at the Port of Brunswick in Southeast Georgia earlier this fall, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Those trucks will bring daily shipments of vehicle parts from the company’s suppliers to the Metaplant. The service will ultimately expand to include a “broader network” of Hyundai EV suppliers.

Adding Production and Refueling Operations

A Hyundai-Glovis joint venture known as HTWO Logistics will add a mobile hydrogen fuel station at the plant to support the fleet. Hyundai officials said the campus will eventually house a refueling station and hydrogen production capabilities. HTWO is the name of Hyundai’s hydrogen brand, which was unveiled at the CES expo in Las Vegas earlier this year.
