The Toyota GR86 Hakone Is a Blast from the Past

In exciting news for fans of retro vehicles,Toyotais bringing back a special edition of its GR86 for 2025 called theHakone, paying homage to Japan’s Hakone Turnpike.

Only 860 Hakone models will be made for the U.S. market and will be available at Toyota dealerships towards the end of this year.

Toyota’s GR86 Hakone

The gorgeous Hakone has a unique ridge green exterior, 18-inch satin bronze wheels, a duck-tail spoiler, and special Hakone badging. It features a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder boxer engine with 228 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque.

The 2025 GR86 has been upgraded to include improvements like retuned shocks and electric power steering. Making it one of the lightest sports cars available, it’s constructed from lightweight materials, with an aluminum hood and structural adhesives, and weighs only a little over 2,800 pounds.

Hakone’s Features

The Hakone has Brembo brakes, SACHS dampers, and updated throttle mapping for quicker responses. The car is available with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Inside, the Hakone features a fancy shift knob with bronze detailing, a GR plaque, and Ultrasuede sport seats that are beautifully trimmed with tan leather and six pounds lighter than the generation 86’s. It has a touchscreen multimedia system, six speakers, a digital instrument panel, and a handy push-button start.

Connectivity and Enhanced Safety

The new car’s connectivity features are impressive, allowing owners to interact with their car via a phone app. The company is offering one-year trial subscriptions to its helpful services Safety Connect (emergency assistance/roadside help), Service Connect (maintenance updates/car health reports), and Remote Connect (remote interaction for locking/unlocking doors, starting the engine, etc.).

Toyota has placed great emphasis on safety, so all cars will come standard with the company’s Active Safety Suite, which includes features like Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning. The suite also includes an anti-theft system and Toyota’s Star Safety System with Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control.

Toyota GR86 Hakone—Conclusion

The Hakone edition, along with the rest of the GR86 lineup, will be available at Toyota dealerships in the fall of 2024. Pricing will be announced later. Only 860 units of the Hakone special edition will be produced for the U.S. market.

As an extra perk, Toyota is also offering buyers a free one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association, which will give them access to the association’s High Performance Driving Event and discounts on its other events.
