Casio, famous for its calculators and wristwatches, has created a new furry, AI-powered pet called Moflin, which aims to fill the emotional void left by traditional pets.
The success of Moflin obviously hinges on technology rather than biology. This somewhat hamster-like, fuzzy tribble-shaped robot relies on programmed responses to simulate affection through sounds and movements.
For traditional pet lovers, Moflin and its pet parent’s emotional bond will definitely come off as artificial. But for those who cannot care for a living animal due to allergies, living situations, or lifestyle constraints, Moflin could be the pet they always dreamt of.
Comfort and companionship—that’s what Moflin’s design is all about. Its soft, hypoallergenic fur and cuddly appearance suggest it is meant to be held and snuggled, fostering a true sense of closeness.
Casio claims that with time and the power of AI, Moflin can develop a unique personality that adapts to its owner’s voice and handling style.
Moreover, the rationale behind the creation of Moflin is to address mental wellness. With loneliness on the rise, the AI pet functions as an emotional support tool—akin to the robotic cat, Qoobo.
One major issue with Moflin is that its emotional state can only be communicated through an app rather than observable behavior, as we see in real pets.
There’s also the question of how long these AI pets can provide the solace they are designed for. With a battery life of only five hours and a need for regular charging, Moflin’s functionality could be its biggest drawback.
