Early last year, Stellantis unveiled the Ram 1500 Revolution, its first all-electric truck. With a near 500 mile range, the industry took notice.
The Revolution showcased a variety of features, but it was the removable third-row jump seating that drew curiosity from SUV fans amid a large vehicle surge.
However, when the revolution’s production concept, the REV, was released, the feature was missing, which caused some disappointment.
However, Ram recently filed and published a patent for an attachable and detachable jump seat configured for the rear wall of the passenger cabin. When you remove common ICE components like the engine and transmission, you free up space for occupants and cargo.
According to Chief Ram Designer for Interiors Ryan Nagode, he got the idea for the track seating from parents who sat in stadium seats at youth sporting events.
While the REV doesn’t include third-row seating, demand remains, and Ram’s new patent application suggests that may be closer than it seems. With minivan demand declining in recent years, third-row SUVs have seen a ramp-up in popularity. Much of the interest comes from millennials looking for a larger family vehicle, and a third-row truck alternative could address this portion of the market.
