BAE Systems Deploys First Batch of “Bug” Nano Drones to British Army

BAE Systems is collaborating with UAVTEK, a drone manufacturer based out of the UK, to develop nano drones they call "bugs.”

The Bug is a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that weighs 196 g. The mini quadcopter has a 40-minute battery, swarm capabilities, and can stand up to winds of more than 50 mph.

The nano drone has a high-res camera and antennas that can beam the video back to troops and commanders up to 2 km away, in multiple locations. It will soon have infrared detection capabilities as well.

In a recent Army Warfighting Experiment (AWE) event hosted by the Ministry of Defense’s Future Capability Group, the bug was the only nano-UAV that could stand up to severe weather.

BAE and UAVTEK recently delivered the first 30 Bugs to the British Army.

UAVTEK designs and builds the UAVs, and BAE provides secure hardware under the hood.

Next, the teams will add sensing equipment and find ways to integrate Bugs into other military equipment.
