Self-driving trucking company Kodiak Robotics, Inc.announcedits sixth-generation truck, a driverless semi, during CES 2024. Kodiak plans to roll out the truck to various vehicle types and begin operations between Houston and Dallas, Texas, in 2024.
The company stated that the development is the result of five years of testing.
The driverless truck features redundant steering and power, a backup braking system, and Kodiak’s Actuation Control Engine system.
In lieu of a driver, Kodiak has implemented The Kodiak Driver, the company’s vehicle-agnostic self-driving system. Kodiak also reported that the sixth-generation truck, compared to the first-generation version, provides twice the GPU processor cores, 1.6 times greater processing speed, 2.75 times greater bandwidth, and three times more memory.
To further enhance the truck’s safety features, Kodiak upgraded its proprietary SensorPods to include a pair of LiDAR sensors and two more side radar sensors. With the upgrades, the driverless truck is set to incorporate four LiDAR sensors, six radar sensors, and 12 cameras.
The truck’s additional safety features are redundant LTE communication links, top-mounted hazard lights, and microphones, the latter of which can detect sounds from potential hazards.
Kodiak stated that it planned to introduce additional features to the sixth-generation truck during its operational life, including the integration of a next-generation Ambarella CV3-AD AI domain control system-on-chip, which is expected to advance the truck’s machine learning abilities.
