Formlabs Opens New Facility in the Original “Machine Shop of the World”

Earlier this month, 3D printing company Formlabs announced a new regional headquarters in Milwaukee.Luke Winston, the company’s chief business officer, said the new location in the city’s Third Ward neighborhood will create more than 100 new jobs over the next three years. The office currently has more than 20 employees on staff.

Although the company scouted several other locations in the region, Winston said the company was drawn to the city’s talent pool and "huge technical base.” The 20,000-square-foot facility is an open-concept office with a print farm, a pair of showrooms, and examples of unique 3D prints. According to the company, Milwaukee’s sales and service teams will support customers in the area.

In a statement, Winston says the company is "thrilled to build a team in the original ‘machine shop of the world.’”

Milwaukee has a legacy in advanced manufacturing that Formlabs found suitable for its new tech hub. The company was also drawn to the state’s educational system, which has produced a deep pool of engineering talent. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, a public-private agency charged with business development in the state, authorized up to $675,000 in performance-based income tax credits. To qualify, Formlabs must hit its job creation targets within three years.

Formlab announced earlier this year that it has sold more than 100,000 professional printers, printing over 100 million parts for the industry.

The printing company has also participated in some unique collaborations. For example, in July, the company partnered with Hasbro to bring the toy maker’s Selfie Series to market. The toy line allows fans and collectors to scan their faces using an app, which creates a 3D-printed version of the customer’s head that is placed on action figures from G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, Power Rangers, or other popular brands.

Formlabs has more than 800 workers who design and manufacture 3D printers. The printers are used in applications that range from rapid prototyping to end-use manufacturing. The Somerville, Massachusetts-based company has offices in North Carolina, China, Germany, Hungary, Japan, and Singapore.

Formlabs currently has open positions posted on the company’s website.
