Fanuc Opens Michigan Robotics Facility

A Michigan automation company last week officially opened a new facility to develop and build industrial robots and manufacturing automation systems.

Fanuc’s North Campus, located in Auburn Hills, Michigan, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday — just over a year after breaking ground. Company officials said the 461,000 square-foot space will house engineering, product development, manufacturing, and warehousing departments.

Fanuc officials said the new location would help the company keep pace with growing demand for automation technologies. Executives also highlighted the need to train current and future manufacturing workers during the grand opening.

"We need to upskill the existing labor force on the latest technologies in the industry,” said Mike Cicco, president and CEO of Fanuc America, according to Detroit News. "This will increase their skills and will also increase their pay.”

Tuesday’s event showcased more than 20 robots, including systems for assembly, material handling, packaging, palletizing, painting, and welding. The facility houses the world’s strongest robot — capable of lifting up to 2.3 tons — and two Fanuc cobots packed food for a local nonprofit during the demonstration.

The new location brings the company’s footprint in suburban Detroit to more than 1 million square feet.
