Seabike, a French company that makes water bikes and accessories, is offering a buoyant, portable underwater device that acts similarly to a bicycle. It features an extendable pole with pedals and a propeller attached to the end, and all swimmers need to do is strap the bike’s ergonomic belt to their waists, locate the pedals, and start pedaling as if they were riding a bike.
The Seabike’s pedals drive the nearly 15-inch propeller, which allows the user to move much faster than traditional swimming.
The company said it takes owners five to 10 minutes to learn how to use it. While operating the 4.5 to 5.5-pound Seabike, users can swim with their arms like a freestyle swimmer, rest their arms however they like, and tilt downward to go underwater to exercise the SCUBA setup compatibility. The company also offers snorkeling tours in Cannes, France.
According to New Atlas, the Seabike’s propeller is reversible, allowing users to flip and drive the water bike with their arms. Additionally, Seabike claimed that the propeller’s relatively low speed prevents it from causing injuries if it comes into contact with a person, making the device safe for lap swimming at a local pool.
Seabike sells various versions of the device, including the Seabike 2.0, the Seabike Pro, and the Seabike Premium. The Pro and Premium versions have a ballast weight of approximately 1.4 pounds. The Pro also features a reduced pontoon diameter compared to the 2.0.
Seabike emphasized the device’s quick-release propeller and claimed that users do not need additional tools to secure it. Prices range from about $312 to $636.
