Construction company Mortenson and renewable energy company Terra-Gen LLC recentlyannouncedthe completion of the Edwards & Sanborn Solar + Energy Storage project in Kern County, California.
According to Mortenson, the EPC contractor for the energy and solar storage scopes, the project represents the largest solar plus energy storage hub in the United States. Construction on the site began in 2021 and featured over 1,000 workers.
The project covers over 4,600 acres with over 1.9 million First Solar modules. Mortenson expects the site to generate 875 megawatts DC of solar energy, provide 3,287 megawatt-hours of energy storage, and offer an interconnection capacity of 1,300 megawatts to the California Independent System Operator (ISO) Grid.
Otherfeaturesinclude 98 miles of MV wire, 361 miles of DC wire, and 120,720 installed batteries. The project will supply power to various locations, including Southern California Edison, the city of San Jose, the Clean Power Alliance, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and Starbucks.
California ISO manages electricity flow for approximately 80% of the state and a small portion of Nevada. The grid is estimated to power more than 238,000 homes and displace over 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
