Bridgestone Debuts Better-Performing Lunar Rover Tire

On March 29, 2024,Bridgestonereleased news of anew projectin development—the Lunar Rover Tire. This groundbreaking product is innovative in more ways than one, but perhaps its most impressive feature is that it’s completely airless.

Introducing the Bridgestone Lunar Rover Tire

Through vast research and strategic development, Bridgestone created the Lunar Rover Tire in alignment with its ethos of supporting mobility evolution in space and on Earth. Unlike the company’s traditional tire designs, and its other lunar tire products, the Lunar Rover has a skeletal structure with thin metal spokes and "Air Free” technology that allows the tire to withstand the harsh lunar environment.

This second-generation tire also features a segmented tread to improve its durability and traction. Drawing inspiration from the footpads of desert-traversing camels, the company added a metal-based material resembling soft felt on its outer—the part that has direct contact with regolith (a loose and fine sand-like covering on the moon’s surface)—for superior traction.

Bridgestone’s Mid-Term Business Plan

Bridgestone’s release of the Lunar Rover Tire is in alignment with itsMid-Term Business Planthat aims to extend the "Air Free” technology beyond Earth into space exploration. The company says that this plan is in place so that Bridgestone can work towards being recognized as a sustainable solutions company by 2050.

The Lunar Rover Tire will also help the company expand its presence as a big player in the space industry, and we can expect notable collaborations and co-creation opportunities, and international partnerships in the months and years to come.

The Lunar Rover Tire at the 39th Space Symposium

The annual Space Symposium—the leading forum event in the global space community—is the perfect opportunity for Bridgestone to show off its new product. This innovative new tire is due to be showcased at the 39thSpace Symposiumin Colorado Springs.

This year the event takes place on April 8–11, 2024. Previous speakers at the symposium include heads of international space agencies, and representatives from Capital Space, LLC, and RocketLab.
