Boom Supersonic Finalizes Construction of Overture Superfactory

Boom Supersonic officially finalized the construction of the United State’s first supersonic airliner factory on June 17, 2024. The Overture Superfactory, where Boom will manufacture these super speedy aircraft, is located in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Piedmont Triad International Airport.

The aircraft will change the world of air travel as we know it. It can fly twice the speed of your average commercial plane, and the best part? It can be done with 100% sustainable fuel.

The initial assembly line at the Superfactory can churn out 33 of these planes a year valued at $6 billion, and a second line is in the works that will double annual production. The factory campus will also feature a delivery center for airlines to collect their planes.

In addition to providing quick and innovative travel options for millions of passengers, the Superfactory will also significantly boost the state of North Carolina. Over 2,400 jobs will be added, and North Carolina’s economy is estimated to grow by $32 billion over the next two decades.

Overture Superfactory: Construction and Design

The factory was designed by BRPH, an architecture, engineering, and construction company, and constructed by the BE&K Building Group, which is headquartered in North Carolina and has a regional office in Greenville, South Carolina.

Boom is now working with Advanced Integration Technology to kit the Superfactory with all the necessary tooling on the production floor, with an advanced cell test unit at the top of the list.

Boom’s Supersonic Passenger Aircraft: The XB-1

In April 2024, Boom’s XB-1 took its first supersonic flight after being granted a Special Flight Authorization by the Federal Aviation Administration, allowing it to fly faster than the speed of sound. This is Overture’s supersonic demonstrator and the plane that will see the return of passenger supersonic air travel since the Concorde officially retired in 2003.

During testing, the XB-1 reached a speed of 238 knots, or 273 mph, at an altitude of 7,120 feet. It’s currently being tested using the designated XB-1 flight test program in Mojave, California.

Boom Overture Superfactory — Conclusion

Boom Supersonic’s founder and CEO, Blake Scholl, highlighted the importance of the super factory’s completion in keeping the U.S. at the top of the aerospace manufacturing industry and revolutionizing air travel for millions of passengers worldwide.

The company’s efforts are supported by the local authorities. Additionally, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, North Carolina Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger, and the Chair of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority Paul Mengert praised Boom for bringing back supersonic air travel, making a sustainable supersonic airliner, and bringing jobs and investments to the state.
