
The Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a $253.7 million contract to Williams International for the American manufacturer to ramp up the production of gas turbine engines used in modern defense systems, particularly missiles.
Boosting U.S. Defense Manufacturing
With growing global threats, the DoD is focusing heavily on investing in domestic capabilities to strengthen the U.S.’s edge in defense technologies, stating that more precision weapons are needed to safeguard national security.
This funding will allow Williams International to make more of these gas turbine engines, which are used to power precision strike weapons, like the Harpoon, JASSM (joint air-to-surface standoff), LRASM (long-range anti-ship), and Tomahawk missiles.
Funding
The funding comes from the 2024 Indo-Pacific Security Supplemental Appropriations Act and the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act.
The contract is in line with the 2024 National Defense Industrial Strategy, which prioritizes expanding domestic production capacities and boosting the country’s supply chains.
Proactive Against Threats
The Williams award—which is one of five contracts totaling $290.8 million that have been allocated this fiscal year under the Defense Production Act—will ensure a quick and steady supply of long-range weapons to the U.S. Air Force and Navy.
The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy, Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale emphasized that the investment is all about giving armed forces top-of-the-line tools to respond to challenges more effectively.
DoD’s Investment in Gas Turbine Engines
Williams International will not only have the capacity to deliver a lot more of these gas turbine engines, but also develop more advanced engines that can meet the DoD’s needs to support both national security and the defense industrial base.
The Director of the Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization directorate, Anthony Di Stasio called the project a strategic maneuver to ensure the U.S. stays a global leader in advanced manufacturing.
