A group representing the diesel industry said manufacturing of diesel engines grew last year in the U.S., according to a recent study.
The Diesel Technology Forum cited research from Rhein and Associates that showed manufacturers across 13 states produced a total of 890,000 diesel engines in 2017.
The group also said diesel engines directly supported some $3.4 trillion in domestic economic activity — equivalent to about 11% of the nation’s entire private sector industrial activity — and impacted half the country’s economic sectors.
Forum executive director Allen Schaeffer noted diesel is “the powertrain of choice” for industries including agriculture, mining, construction, and shipping.
Numbers compiled by the group, meanwhile, suggested that diesel engines, diesel fuel production, and related vehicles and equipment supported 1.25 million U.S. jobs, including more than 260,000 mechanics.
North Carolina produced 327,500 diesel engines to lead all states last year. Second-place Indiana, at nearly 161,000 engines, manufactured less than half that total. Other top-producing states included Michigan at 109,000, New York at 76,400 and Ohio at 70,000 engines.
