General Motors Announces $1 Billion Investment in Michigan Facilities

Automotive manufacturer General Motors Co. announced it would invest approximately $1 billion in two manufacturing locations in Flint, Michigan.

The investment will prepare the Flint Metal Center and Flint Assembly sites to build next-generation internal combustion engine heavy-duty trucks. The company did not disclose product details or timing regarding its upcoming trucks.

Flint Metal Center’s funding includes $233 million for press refurbishments, new equipment, and new stamping dies. Flint Assembly will receive $788 million for new tooling and equipment, as well as expansions of the body shop building and general assembly conveyor.

GM said the development would increase the company’s investment in U.S. manufacturing and parts distribution to more than $30.5 billion since 2013. It also adds to the automaker’s recent investments in Flint, which included $579 million at Flint Engine Operations and $103.5 million at Davison Road Processing Center earlier this year.

Gerald Johnson, General Motors’ executive vice president for global manufacturing and sustainability, said the latest announcement represents the company’s commitment to its truck customers and Flint employees.

GM reported 288,000 trucks sold in 2022, a 38% increase in heavy-duty pickup sales year-over-year. The company’s 2023 Chevrolet Silverado HD was its best-selling retail full-size heavy-duty truck.
