Mercedes-Benz announced the delivery of the first electric “Popemobile” to Pope Francis. The German automaker has supplied the Vatican with cars for 94 years, including “Popemobiles” inspired by the company’s G-Class for the last 45 years.
Door, Seats, and Roof Modifications
Mercedes based the new handmade, pearl white vehicle on the G 580 with EQ technology and tailored the vehicle’s electric drivetrain for slow speeds used during public appearances. The company also replaced the rear bench seat with a centered, height-adjustable seat.
The designers removed the roof at the B-pillar and transitioned the B-pillar into the wall to form a side profile. A removable hardtop provides shelter in the event of rain and other weather conditions.
Specialists rebuilt the left rear door from a single piece and welded it into the bodyshell. The team also moved the rear door’s hinges to the other side.
The First Delivery
Mercedes’ history of providing popes with cars dates back to 1930 when it gave Pope Pius XI a Nürburg 460 Pullman Sedan. The automaker earned the contract after demonstrating its ability to integrate folding seats for additional dignitaries and staff.
The History of “Popemobiles”
Other deliveries include a 300 Landaulet for Pope John XXIII, a 600 Pullman Landaulet for Pope Paul VI, and a 460 series G-Class model, the first official “Popemobile,” for Pope John Paul II.
