The maker of Jeep and Ram vehicles plans to temporarily stop production at plants in Canada and Mexico this month amid vehicle tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.
The shutdowns are also expected to result in 900 temporary layoffs of Stellantis workers in the U.S., the Associated Press reported.
Closings in Ontario, Central Mexico
Stellantis plans to close its assembly plant in Windsor, Ontario, beginning April 7 and reopen it on April 21. The assembly plant in Toluca, Mexico, will also be shut down for the remainder of the month starting April 7.
Layoffs in Indiana, Michigan
Those closures, in turn, will reverberate through Stellantis facilities in the U.S. Hundreds of workers will be temporarily laid off at an Indiana casting plant and a pair of stamping plants in Michigan.
Meeting "Current Market Dynamics”
Antonio Filosa, the automaker’s North American COO, wrote in an email to employees that the moves were needed given “the current market dynamics.” He added that the company is working with government officials, union leaders, suppliers, and its dealerships to “manage and adapt” to the uncertain environment.
Trump’s Auto Tariffs
President Trump announced in late March that he would impose 25% tariffs on auto imports, which were met with a matching tariff from Canada’s government. The auto tariffs were announced before sweeping new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners were unveiled in early April.
