Energy Department Awards $3.3 Million for Manufacturing, Materials Research

Federal energy officials recently announced the recipients of more than $3 million in funding to promote manufacturing and materials development using advanced computing technology.

The 11 projects selected by the U.S. Energy Department’s High-Performance Computing for Energy Innovation initiative will each receive up to $300,000 under a cost-sharing agreement with the federal government. The companies will work with the department’s national laboratories to deploy modeling, simulation, and data analysis.

The agency hopes the projects will help improve manufacturing efficiency and lead to new materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions.

“These projects will leverage the power of high-performance computing to improve energy productivity and help sustain U.S. leadership in manufacturing,” Daniel Simmons, the assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy, said in a statement.

Eight of the 11 awards fall under the department’s HPC4Manufacturing program, including awards to steel giant ArcelorMittal to develop lightweight steel and reduce losses during the refining process. Other selections in the manufacturing segment include 3M, PPG Industries, Flawless Photonics, Guardian Glass, NLMK USA, and OxEon Energy.

8 Rivers Capital will receive funding to liner and turbine design under the HPC4Materials program, while defense giant Raytheon will examine flow and heat transfer, as well as identify “high entropy alloys for advanced ultra-supercritical power plant operating conditions.”
