Minnesota Manufacturer to Expand Aerospace, Medical Production

An aerospace and medical manufacturer recently outlined plans to expand its Twin Cities-area footprint by more than 50%.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Ultra Machining Co. notified officials in Monticello, Minnesota, of their intentions to build a 40,000-square-foot facility adjacent to its current 75,00 square-foot factory. The company produces steel aerospace components and medical implants using precision robots, lathes, and drills, the report said.

Ultra Chief Operating Officer Jaci Dukowitz told the paper in a statement that a new facility is needed to “relieve capacity pressure at our existing site.”

The expansion is expected to create 60 new manufacturing jobs; about 200 people currently work at the company. The property could eventually accommodate further expansion to more than 80,000 square feet.

City officials told the Star-Tribune that the project would be a multi-million-dollar effort, but the company declined to disclose its overall cost or whether it would receive any state or local government incentives. The city reportedly plans to purchase the property for the expansion through a tax increment financing abatement.
