A manufacturer of foam applicators and daubers reportedly plans to build a new facility at the site of a long-closed steel plant in upstate New York.
Buffalo-based TMP Technologies purchased the former Bethlehem Steel property in the adjacent suburb of Lackawanna for just over $1 million and expects to begin construction on a 280,000-square foot facility later this year, WBFO-FM reports.
The station reported that the company would shift operations currently housed on Buffalo’s far east side to the new site. The project is expected to add 30 jobs to TMP’s current workforce of nearly 100 and double the size of its packaging facility.
TMP President Bob Laughlin told the station in a statement that the company has reached its manufacturing capacity and currently requires four outside warehouses for storage.
The steel plant opened at the turn of the last century and was acquired by Bethlehem Steel in 1922. The company closed most of its operations in 1983, and local officials purchased 148 acres of the property two years ago in hopes of redeveloping the area. Laughlin said the company is “proud to be an early partner in this recovery effort.”
The sale is pending approval of the Buffalo and Erie County Industrial Land Development Corp., which reportedly plans to vote on the proposal in late summer or early fall.
