DENSO, Toyota Establish Automotive Semiconductor Joint Venture

DENSO Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation have established a joint venture for research and advanced development of next-generation, in-vehicle semiconductors. The two companies are currently in the process of putting the final details in place, with the goal of establishing the new company in April 2020.

As the number of in-vehicle semiconductors has grown, so have the demands placed on their reliability and performance. In June 2018, DENSO and Toyota made an initial agreement to consolidate the production and development of electronic components under the DENSO umbrella. Based on this agreement, they have been working to establish more competitive production and development systems and processes.

The new company will research the basic structure and processing method of next-generation semiconductors and develop electronic components by implementing semiconductors. Applications could include power modules for electric vehicles and periphery monitoring sensors for automated vehicles.

Both companies feel the new joint venture helps demonstrate their commitment to the future of mobility. The company will be 51% owned by DENSO and should employ upwards of 500 workers.
