U.S. Accelerates EV Manufacturing with 10 New Factories on the Way

Good news for the U.S.electric vehicle(EV) sector; ten new EV battery manufacturing plants are being opened up as early asthis year, giving the industry a much-needed boost.

EVs in the U.S.

The future of the EV sector in the U.S. has been a little uncertain since the newadministrationtook over and cut many of the EV adoption incentives previously put in place. Over the years, these incentives helped companies like General Motors, Kia, and Ford reach record sales of EVs in North America.

China is still the world leader in battery production, but despite this, the U.S. has been hailed as the fastest-growing region for planned battery cell capacity. These 10 new factories will nearly double the country’s battery manufacturing capacity.

New EV Factories

These are the ten new battery plants that are set to expand the U.S.’s battery production capacity to 421.5 GWh (from around 226 GWh) per year:

  1. LG Energy Solution (with Honda) – Ohio
  2. LG Energy Solution – Arizona
  3. SK On (with Ford) – Tennessee
  4. SK On (with Ford) – Kentucky
  5. SK On (Hyundai) – Georgia
  6. Panasonic – Kansas
  7. Samsung SDI – Indiana
  8. Stellantis – Indiana,
  9. Envision AESC – Kentucky
  10. Our Next Energy – Michigan

Most of these factories have reportedly already been built—or are nearing completion—and are (or will be) ready to go online later this year.

Strengthening the U.S. EV Supply Chain

Perhaps the largest benefit of these factories opening up is the real chance of domestic manufacturing ramping up and the U.S. finally reducing its reliance on China.

With these new plants, major automakers are moving battery production closer to home. Toyota’s $14 billion battery plant in North Carolina is also expected to begin production in April, and will supply batteries for EVs and hybrids.

EV Momentum in the U.S.

Despite policy uncertainty, momentum in the U.S. EV sector remains strong. Battery production is scaling up, jobs are being created, and manufacturers are determined to continue growing their EV market share.

While changes in incentives andtariffson Canadian and Mexican imports may slow things down, experts suggest that the EV transition has already gained too much traction to be stopped or reversed. Industry experts believe that as long as prices go down, American buyers will continue adopting EVs, even if incentives are cut.
