E-commerce behemoth Amazon has officially introduced a new warehouse robot that is capable of hauling much heavier loads across the floors of its distribution hubs.

Titan recently made its debut at the company’s SAT1 facility in San Antonio. The mobile robot can lift up to 2,500 pounds — roughly double the weight that can be carried by Hercules, currently the most-deployed robot in Amazon’s network of warehouses.

Amazon officials wrote that Titan will initially carry items too large or bulky for its current robots, including pallets full of products or even small appliances. Eventually, it could work with Amazon’s other warehouse systems to bring those items directly to its employees.

Amazon said that Titan incorporates technologies from several of the company’s existing robotics systems, from battery charging and hardware to computer vision and obstacle detection.

The company says its robots not only enable a more efficient warehouse but a safer one as well, by reducing the need for employees to move heavy objects, walk long distances, or undertake repeated motions that could lead to injury. Those employees, the company said, can instead focus on other tasks that require different skills.

Amazon says it has deployed more than 750,000 robots across its global distribution operations to date.
