Japanese automaker Nissan and South Korean battery producer SK On will establish U.S. manufacturing operations to supply batteries for Nissan’s electric vehicles, company officials announced.
Supplying Nissan’s Mississippi-Made EVs
The agreement calls for SK On to provide Nissan with nearly 100 gigawatt-hours of high-nickel EV batteries over a six-year window from 2028 to 2033. Nissan, in turn, will use the batteries in the EVs produced at its plant in Canton, Mississippi.
Supporting Hundreds of Jobs
The companies said the announcement represents an investment of $661 million, including equipment. The new SK On operations are expected to support 1,700 jobs.
Expanding SK On’s Automaker Partnerships
The deal is the first between SK On and a Japanese automaker, although the South Korean company has partnerships with other U.S. automakers — particularly Ford. SK On currently operates two U.S. battery plants and is building four more.
Once “fully operational,” SK On expects to have an annual production capacity of more than 180 gigawatt-hours in the U.S. alone.
