On February 20, 2025, electric vehicle (EV) company Stellantis introduced a new self-driving technology, STLA AutoDrive, with three levels of autonomy: (i) hands-on, (ii) hands-free (eyes-on), and (iii) hands-free (eyes-off).
STLA AutoDrive 1.0
As Stellantis’ first in-house automated driving system, STLA AutoDrive was created to reduce driver fatigue and enhance convenience, particularly in stop-and-go traffic. Stellantis wants to give drivers back valuable time—whether to read, watch a movie, or just enjoy the ride—while still ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
The system is built to integrate seamlessly with the company’s other advanced EV tech: STLA Brain (software architecture and central intelligence system), and STLA Smart Cockpit (infotainment and user interface platform).
AutoDrive Levels
The system’s different automation levels, designed for varying driver needs, are:
Level 2: Hands-on, includes adaptive cruise control and lane centering functions, works at highway speeds
Level 2+: Hands-free, eyes-on, allows for automated lane-keeping and traffic-aware cruise control at higher speeds
Level 3: Hands-free, eyes-off, can go up to 37 mph, even in low-light or challenging weather conditions (the company is already working on enhancements that could increase speed to 59 mph, and add off-road automation
Stellantis’ Vision
Thanks to STLA Brain, the system is designed to continuously improve via over-the-air updates and real-time data integration.
Stellantis engineers have prioritized smooth, human-like driving behavior, ensuring a stress-free and intuitive experience.
When it’s Hitting the Roads
The company has confirmed that STLA AutoDrive is fully developed and ready for deployment, with availability expected to roll out based on market readiness and regulatory approvals.
The system already complies with current laws—which means drivers are required to stay alert and ready to take over if/when necessary. Stellantis plans to further advance the tech in the near future.
