Drivers of Ford’s electric vehicles (EVs) will soon have thousands more options for quickly zapping their vehicles back to a full charge.
The automaker announced that it has reached an agreement with Tesla Motors that would enable Ford EVs to be charged on Tesla’s Superchargers throughout North America — a move that doubles the amount of fast-charging stations available to Ford drivers.
Under the agreement, owners of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit that are equipped with a Combined Charging System port would be able to have their vehicles fitted with a Tesla-developed adapter that would allow their use of more than 12,000 Tesla V3 Superchargers in the United States and Canada. Moving forward, Ford will equip its EVs with the North American Charging Standard connector, which would eliminate the need for an adapter.
Ford officials said that access to fast-charging infrastructure is critical to its growth as a maker of EVs, and that Tesla had built the largest, most efficient, and most reliable network to date.
Although Ford’s well-received Mustang Mach-E has posed the most serious challenge thus far to Tesla’s pioneering — and still market-leading — EVs, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at an event to mark the pact that its charging network was intended to be supportive of all electric and sustainable transportation, rather than a “walled garden.” Tesla’s charging systems director noted that the network would also support other electric vehicle makers who adopt the NACS framework.
Ford said that its BlueOval Charge Network is the largest public charging network at more than 84,000 chargers overall. The network currently includes more than 10,000 public fast-chargers, and Ford dealers are expected to add some 1,800 more by early next year — just before Ford launches “a series of next-generation EVs” beginning in the 2025 model year.
