Thermo Fisher Creates Metrology Solution to Improve Battery Safety

On March 27, 2024, Thermo Fisher Scientific—top provider of scientific instrumentation, reagents and consumables, and software—brought out the innovative LInspector™ Edge In-line Mass Profilometer.

The companydesigned this deviceto help battery manufacturers improve their batteries by providing more accurate data about the mass loading of electrodes. This is an important advancement, especially when it comes toelectric vehicles(EVs), as it will help manufacturers make better and safer batteries.

Thermo Scientific™ LInspector™ Edge In-line Mass Profilometer

To address the hole left by traditional methods of measuring coating quality in batteries (which only focus on small areas of the electrode surface, leaving much of it unmeasured), Thermo Fisher created this new device—much to the delight of battery manufacturers everywhere.

This new technology measures the entire electrode in real time and offers more comprehensive insights. It also supports the world’s general shift towards a cleaner energy future, as it particularly helps in things like batteries for EVs.

Benefits for Battery Manufacturers

Battery manufacturers will now be able to better control their production processes and ensure higher quality battery products. The fact that this new tech can enhance battery performance, which, in turn, leads to higher charge densities, faster recharge times, longer operational lifetimes, and better reliability, is a revelation for battery manufacturers.

By providing a more detailed understanding of mass loading across the entire electrode, the LInspector™ Edge In-line Mass Profilometer enables manufacturers to meet strict quality requirements for energy storage devices. This helps in reducing defects in final battery products, and improving the control of the overall process, as well as increasing profitability.
