California Company to 3D Print Air Vents for Lamborghini

Silicon Valley 3D printing company Carbon is expanding its partnership with iconic sports-car maker Lamborghini, officials from both companies announced in December.

The companies began working together in February with the development of a fuel cap and air-duct clip part for the Urus SUV. Under the expanded agreement, Carbon will produce 3D-printed central and lateral air vents for the dashboard of the Sián FKP 37 hybrid sports car.

Carbon officials said its additive manufacturing platform cut 12 weeks off the lead time for the new air vents. Lamborghini CTO Maurizio Reggiani added in the announcement that the company moved from concept to creating a part on a prototype vehicle in three weeks, then moved the part into full production after another three months.

Stefan Gramse, the automaker’s chief procurement officer, said the platform provides its designers and engineers with “the ability to produce better parts.”

“Working with Carbon, we have found a partner that shares our vision for creating best-in-class products that push the limits of what’s possible,” Gramse said.
