The nation’s largest producer of nails reportedly added 120 workers in recent months and plans to add about 80 more by the end of the year.
Missourinet reports that Mid Continent Steel and Wire appears to be recovering after receiving a waiver from tariffs on the steel it imports from Mexico.
The Poplar Bluff, Missouri company attributed some 200 job cuts in 2018 to lower-priced competition from overseas nail manufacturers, but officials expect to return to its previous staffing levels this fall. Since March, its workforce reportedly climbed from 300 employees to 420 workers and should approach 500 by 2020.
Although some of those new jobs went to those initially affected by the 2018 layoffs, most employees are new to the company. Chris Pratt, Mid Continent’s operations manager, told the publication that many former employees were likely a bit apprehensive about returning after their jobs were cut.
About 80% of the company’s business, meanwhile, has returned since the waiver took effect, and Pratt suggested Mid Continent plans to grow “even more.”
“We take pride in being able to provide those jobs to those people and for them to be able to provide for their families,” he told Missourinet.
